• Caramel-Cinnamon Pull Apart Bread Mix

When I was a kid, my mom used to fix something we called monkey bread. Why it was called that, I have no idea. Maybe we looked like a group of monkeys as we grabbed for a chunk of this gooey, delicious dessert. As an adult living the low-carb lifestyle, monkey bread has been nothing but a distant memory. I’ll admit that I’ve been tempted more than once to come up with a low-carb version, but I’m just not creative enough to be successful. Dixie Carb Counters came up with their own version of this tasty treat and I have to say I’m pretty impressed.

While the Dixie Diners Caramel-Cinnamon Pull Apart Bread doesn’t have the gooey consistancy of the original pull-apart bread our grandparents used to make, it’s pretty close in taste. It has a nice cinnamon taste and the texture is decent, but not as bready as I would have preferred. (I realize bready isn’t a real word… just go with me on this one.) It’s not hard to make, just a little time consuming. There are no sugar-alcohols, which certainly endears me to this product even more. It does however have flour and soy. Soy makes me sad. Flour makes me even sadder. The ingredient list is a bit long for my liking as well. So my recommendation for this product is that it’s used for special occassions, like holidays, as a replacement for the high-carb junk that will be available. At just 3 net carbs pers serving, you can’t complain about it too much. Just keep in mind that it’s not something you should eat everday, or even every week. Again, it’s probably fine for a once-in-a-while treat.

Amy, the first time I ever heard about Monkey bread back in the 60′s, my sister had found the recipe & made it. She said that it was called Monkey bread, because you “Monkey around with it”.  Not sure if that was really why they called it that, but that is what the recipe she found said I believe.
I don’t remember it being “stretchy”.  Unless you are taking about the gooieness of the “caramel” coating which some recipes had. (Some just had a cinnamon sugar coating. As with most things, different recipes developed over the years.
    Thanks for the review!

Hmm… stretchy probably isn’t the right word. Gooey is probably a better description. I should change that. :) Thanks!
