• Review: Banana Nut Bread Mix

Certain foods evoke memories, whether good or bad. Fried catfish and I don’t get along. Not because I don’t like the taste, but because I almost choked on a bone once. I’ve never wanted catfish again. Most of the time though, we have good memories associated with food – especially baked goods. There’s a reason the term “comfort food” is so aptly used. One of the goodies that have always made me think of home and family is banana nut bread. But since going low-carb, even the name banana bread gives me the heebie-jeebies. It’s banana and it’s bread, neither of which I’d normally eat. So you can probably imagine my surprise when I learned there was a low-carb banana nut bread mix. I knew I had to at least give Dixie Carb Counters Banana Nut Bread Mix a try.

As anyone might, I fixed up this batch with skepticism. Can it really be anything close to the banana nut bread I’m used to? I wasn’t so sure. The batter sure smelled good, so my hopes were steadily rising as I placed it in the oven.

It came out of the oven looking like banana nut bread. It smelled like banana nut bread. But the true test was how it tasted. I can say at first I was only slightly disappointed. It did taste like banana nut bread, but with a lot less banana and nut. It was more like a hint of banana and I don’t recall really experiencing any chunks of walnuts. It was tasty though and the texture was pretty close to what you’d expect from a dessert bread, only maybe a little more dense.

The top of the package states “Health Food That Tastes Like Junk Food”. Well, sort of. It is certainly a healthier option than it’s full sugar twin. I do think that calling it “health food” is stretching it a bit though. My thoughts on this come from the ingredients list, which is rather long, and, in my opinion, not ideal. That being said, if you are looking for a treat, specifically banana nut bread, this is a decent option. I am happy to report that no sugar alcohols were harmed in the making of this mix. I can personally declare Dixie Carb Counters Banana Nut Bread Mix gastric-distress free. And at only 3 net carbs a slice, it’s an enjoyable change of scenery.

Keep in mind that products like these are meant for later phases of your weight loss plan, and often best used in moderation. I give this product 3.5 stars. I deducted 1.5 stars because of the less-than-stellar ingredients, otherwise I was pleased. As with any product, you’ll need to determine for yourself if this mix is a good fit for your needs.

I don’t think anything can replace good ol’ homemade banana nut bread.  This looks like too much soy for me.

Yes I also think the same….Although this banana nut bread might be tasty but there is no comparison for ol’ homemade banana nut bread…
