I thought I’d let you know about a few changes happening here at Healthy Low-Carb Living.

Some of you may have heard about a new tax law in Illinois that was implemented this year. This law would require companies, who have affiliate associates in this state (such as myself), to pay the state taxes on any purchase made through our links. They claim we are the same as a brick and mortar store for that company and as such should pay the same taxes. For those of us that relied on such links to help with finances, that was a kick to the gut, because larger companies just dumped us. One such company is Amazon.com. They say it is now too expensive for them to work with us. So as of mid April none of the Amazon links on this site have generated any kind of referral fees for us. I do want to take this moment to thank so many of you who have purchased through our links to help keep this website going. It is deeply appreciated!

There is a silver lining though…

As of last week, every amazon link on this website is in the process of being converted to benefit a different amazon affiliate. The reason I’m so pleased to lose the income, is because I can now pass it on to a great cause. Any purchases made on this website from Amazon.com will now benefit the Nutrition & Metabolism Society (NMS). So please keep using our links to make your Amazon purchases, and feel good at the same time knowing you are helping NMS do all the amazing work they do. For those who are not familiar with NMS, they are an organization dedicated to educating the medical community, and public, about the amazing benefits of a low-carbohydrate lifestyle. I’m a member and supporter and I hope you will be too.

The “Books I Recommend” widget on the right sidebar over there has now been converted and is working for NMS. You’ll also see that we have a new “Store” tab above. This store replaced the LC Products page and any sales from that will benefit NMS as well. I am slowly converting any posts that have amazon links in them, but that will honestly take a while. I’ve got a lot of posts on here. If a post has been converted, you will see the following at the bottom:

Disclosure: Affiliate sales from this post benefit the Nutrition & Metabolism Society.

I’m pleased to be able to help NMS in this way and I hope you’ll be pleased with this change as well. I do still have non-amazon affiliate links here too, and those help me with my bills, so if you use those when you can I’ll double love you.

Another changes you’ll notice is that the LC Plans page is missing. Some of the info on that page was outdated, and quite honestly, it was difficult to keep up with. Low-carb plans have died, come back, and been reworked. There are new plans popping up all the time. While I want to keep you informed, I’d have to read each plan in detail and keep up with all the changes for this page to be accurate. I don’t have the time at the moment, so I simply put the latest plan books on the Store page. As always, if anyone has any questions on specific plans, I’m glad to help if I can.

This brings me to emails. I’m having a very hard time keeping up with all the emails right now. I’m absolutely not saying don’t send them, I’m just asking for some patience. I have some who have been waiting for an answer back for a good little while. My life is extremely hectic right now so I’ve not had a lot of spare time. I will get to you though – I promise. Please just forgive me if it takes a while.

I soon hope to add a new page to give you ideas about meal planning and recipes. This seems to be the biggest request from many of my readers. The need for this was expressed on my Facebook Page,  as well in many of the emails I recieve. I’ll do my best to get this going as soon as I can.

Thanks for your patience, and your readership. This blog is an ever-growing, ever-changing animal. It keeps me on my toes (or maybe that should be my butt, since I’m always sitting while I do this), but I love every minute.

Can we donate to you to keep the website going?

    Hi Jay,
I’ve had others ask me this same question, so I may look at adding that option to the site. I never really wanted to ask for donations, but advertising and other revenues just aren’t abundant in this economy and it is getting tough to keep things going at times.
    Thanks so much!

Your kindness is so much appreciated, Amy – may it come back to you ten fold!
    With Gratitude,

I am more than happy to help Laurie! Those revenues should go to someone, might as well be you all! :)

You should not be paying taxes on sales when all you receive is a referral fee. Referral fees are taxable income. I think this will be shot down eventually or at least refined.
I see why they did it…but you are only getting referral  fees. Welcome to the new world of more taxes at any cost.

Actually, Amazon has to pay the extra taxes, and they don’t like it, so they dumped us. They say it will cost them too much. Illinois government, to be abrupt, is corrupt to the core. They spent all our money, all their money, and now they need more to keep us from downing in the debt (which is inevitable anyway). We’ve had a lot of taxes raised this year… a lot. Companies and individuals are moving out of state because of it. We would if we could.
