Review: Big Train Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix

Ride the Big Train and enjoy!

Trying to find a decent low-carb pancake mix is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It’s a tough search. To be honest, I’ve held out little hope for these mixes. Many of them are loaded with so much soy that I can’t get past the taste. I’ve also noticed they seem to have a rubbery texture. Neither is cause for celebration.

I did celebrate however after cooking up a batch of Big Train Buttermilk Pancakes.  With only about 2 net carbs per pancake, it’s hard to find something to complain about. These tasty little pancakes have the perfect texture and an amazing flavor.  And best of all, no soy. Great taste and a decent carb count that will remind you what it’s like to enjoy pancakes and waffles again, without all the guilt.

Nutritional info per 3 prepared pancakes:

Calories: 190

Fat: 0.5 g

Cholesterol: 0 mg

Sodium: 300 mg

Total Carb: 12 g

Fiber: 5 g

Net carbs: 7 g

Sugars: 0 g

Protein: 11 g

This product, while low in carbs, is still probably best used by those in pre-maintenance or maintenance stages due to the ingredients, which contain some corn starch, wheat flour and corn flour. If you are in the weight loss phase of your plan and are just dying for pancakes, this is certainly preferable to eating the the high carb counterpart. Just use your own discretion and enjoy.

My next good bit of news is that as of today I am down a total of 25.4 lbs since jump starting my weight loss with The 6 Week Cure. I feel amazing and I’m loving the results. I had several outfits in the back of the closet just waiting on the day they would fit. Now they do! I still have some boxes of clothes that are even smaller, but I won’t dig those out until I’ve lost a bit more.

I have some great links to share with you today.

First, Tom Naughton was interviewed by Kevin and Wes on the Healthy Mind Fit Body podcast. It’s an awesome interview so be sure to check it out.

Dr. Eades has a fantastic post on his blog about a junk science study. Another great post talks about how he got started in the field of low-carb.

That’s all for now, but will be back later today with some info for those who are addicted to sugar.

See ya!

Review: EatSmart Precision Premium Digital Bathroom Scale

As most of you well know, I’m a huge fan of EatSmart products. They sell high quality, durable products at a reasonable price. Many of you will remember how much I ravedover their EatSmart Nutrition Scale . I’ve owned this scale for over two years now and it’s still going strong. It’s been well worth every penny I paid.  Then they came out with less expensive, but just as reliable, EatSmart Precision Pro – Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale and the EatSmart Precision Touch – Professional Glass Top Digital Kitchen Scale (both with a capacity of 11 lbs). I also own both of these and can attest to them being a fantastic product for those who are concerned about accurate measurements in the kitchen. Then last year we heard about their newest addition – the EatSmart Digital Bathroom Scale.  While I never got around to buying this one, the reviews on Amazon had me convinced that I should. I knew this would be a wonderful tool in the battle against the bulge.

You can imagine my enthusiasm when EatSmart contacted me several months back about trying out their newest bathroom scale. Ofcourse I agreed. I had no doubt in my mind this would be a great product. But I was seriously not prepared for just how awesome this scale really is. I’ve been using my new EatSmart Precision Premium Digital Bathroom Scale since October of 2009 and I can, without a doubt, say it’s the best bathroom scale I have ever owned. I’ve spent a large sum of money on scales that measure body fat, weight, etc. and have always been disappointed at the cheap quality of the scales, not to mention the lack of accuracy. EatSmart’s Precision Premium is less than half the price of some of it’s higher end competitors and it’s a better product.

Hate to “tap and wait” with your current scale? No more of that funny business with the EatSmart Precision Premium. Just step on and get your weight. Are you frustrated with having to step on the scale 50 times just to see the same number twice? Not a problem with the EatSmart Precision Premium. I get the same number every time I step on the scale – no matter how many times I test it. I’m finally free from those bouncing numbers and wondering which is actually my correct weight.

The construction is heavy duty. It doesn’t feel cheap in the least. Heavy and sturdy, it can weigh up to 400 pounds and has a nice bright 3.5″ LCD backlit display.  It’s ultra thin and uses four basic AAA batteries.

Keep in mind that this scale, as with pretty much all scales, work best on a hard surface. So please don’t try to weigh on a carpet or rug, as you may not get a reading that is accurate.

I give this scale five out of five stars. I can’t see any way to improve it, short of teaching it to cook for you. I can dream, right?
